Do you like books about romance and family issues? Lock and key would be a great book for you then; it deals with some real life problems. Lock and Key had amazing setting, great characters, and an even better plot. It is one of my favorite Sarah Dessen books.
First off the setting of this book was great. A lot of Dessen’s books have the same setting, in the same town. This one happened to be in a town called Lakeview. The main character Ruby has lived many places in this town. Many of which have been run down, messy, and just down right revolting. That is until she moved in with her older sister, moving into basically a mansion equipped with a pond in the backyard! The setting in which this book takes place is visual, the way she describes it, it could make you feel as if you lived there.
As for characters, the main one was Ruby. Ruby is a high-strung teen; one who always wanted to do things herself and have no one help her. She is sent off to live with her sister, Cora, when her mom, if you will, “abandoned” her. Cora is Ruby’s older sister, who Ruby hasn’t seen for years. Cora is beautiful with dark hair, petite, so caring, and completely opposite from her sister. Then finally, there’s Nate. Nate, is Ruby’s love interest. Nate is a wonderful boy and has a past too. As you get on with the book, things will start to unravel as you start to learn about each character’s past and present.
Lastly, there’s the plot of the book. In Lock and Key, there are major ups and downs. Things such as Ruby’s mom leaving her but then again, she was never there for her from the start. Or even Ruby’s awkward encounter with meeting Nate. When Ruby is forced to live with Cora, she was unwilling. Ruby hated the fact of having to owe people and even having something to do with them. The last thing she wanted was to be in debt to people. Always as her mom taught her, she was running away from problems to. Later on though as the story moves on she starts to look past these things and starts letting people in, starts trusting. Ruby helps a few people with their problems along the way too.
Overall I would have to say that this book was really different and interesting. It had an amazing story to tell, with even more interesting characters. I would have to say if you’re looking for something different to read with life problems and even romance, THIS IS IT. Lock and Key was defiantly a winner for me.

I love how you used you words. You draw the reader in. You tell about the book but you make it where they are wondering what will happen next and now I want to find out by reading the book. ~Sarah F~
