Way Back in The Ozarks By Howard Hefley Review By Kooper A

Have you ever read a book were you feel like you are in the action just like a main character? Have you ever felt cool creek water run down your body on a hot summer day from reading a book? In the book, Way Back in The Ozarks, you will. This book will keep you guessing and get your adrenalin rushing to see what happens next.
In this book the main character is Howard “Monk” Hefley. He is a young boy growing up in a small town in the Ozark Mountains. They call Howard, Monk, because he runs through the Ozark Forest, like he is the monk of those mountains. Monk has many adventures in the book with a few other characters like his dog and best friend Danny Boy who he picked up right before the dog owner was going to get rid of him. Danny Boy is a really smart dog with a whole lot of character. Monk also hangs around with his best friend, and cousin Junior. These two had lots of great adventures together and grew up side-by-side. Monk also has his brother (James a.k.a Fesser), and the rest of his family of eight children. His dad is one of the best coon dog raisers and one of the best hunters in the small town of Judy. With his wife they have quite a handful with Monk and the other seven kids.
Monk lived in a small town way back in the Ozark Mountains where everybody knows who you are or might even be related to you. It might be the Dry Branch forest where Monk goes to hunt, or by creek where Monk swims and fishes. You might also catch him leaving the school at the school grounds. Or out with his dog causing up some trouble in Judy. Even though Judy is a small town there was always something to do there.
In Judy, Monk always was up to fun, and exciting adventures. One adventure that Monk had, that was one of my favorites, was when monk lived in the log cabin where he was born and, he went to the one-roomed school near by. One day in the middle of winter, Monk ran out of the classroom so hot from the stove that he went and jumped in the freezing cold creek and climbed in a tree so know one could find him. Another adventure Monk had, was when Junior and him put firecrackers in the knotholes of the school’s firewood. They then blew up all the school’s stoves. In the high school, and the school Monk and Junior were in. The final adventure Monk had was to get back his pet raccoons hide back from a hard wear store. Monk’s pet raccoon was killed and his hide was sold to a hard wear store, thirty miles away from his hometown. Monk hitched a ride there and broke in with Danny Boy and found the hide with snakebite above the eye. It was a very hard time for Monk and Danny Boy because he lost their best friend.
This book will keep you on the edge of your seat and will make you laugh and make you cry. But Way Back in The Ozarks is a great book to read and I would suggest it to everyone who would like to see what growing up back then in a small town is like.

Flawless reviewed by Kelsey P.

Have you ever told someone a secret that suddenly the entire town you live in new about?
In the book flawless the author takes you to each of the four girls sides of the story. This book has a lot of drama in it. The girl’s will relies who their true friends are; maybe they should learn how to keep their mouths shut when it comes to secrets.

Allison Delerauntes lives in suburban called rosewood. The town of rosewood was a quiet little suburban town. All the flowers were perfect; everybody’s lawns were always cut and neatly decorated to perfection. Emily, Ali, Aria, Hanna and Spencer all live right next door to each other. Everyone tells Ali anything and everything. They’re all keeping secrets from each other, except ail. She knows it all
But when Ali goes missing, and nobody can find her things start to get a little weird. As two years go on, and Ali still hasn’t showed up something will happen that will change these girls’ lives.

The four main characters, Hanna, Emily, Aria and Spencer are the reason why I love this book. They each seem so perfect on the outside. But on the inside they all have so many problems, not just with themselves but with their family as well.

Arias dad is having an affair with Arias mom. And only aria and her brother know about this. They have to decide if they should tell their mom or not. What will Aria do? Choose her dad’s side or her mom’s side?

When Hanna was 11 years old she was always on the “Heavy” side. Ali always found ways to make her feel uncomfortable with herself. But when Ali goes missing and the girls are all 16 years old now Hanna comes back as a new Hanna, she lost a lot of weight and died her hair.
Emily seems as if she wouldn’t have anything to hide in the book, but oh boy she does. She seems so perfect out of all the rest; she’s a swimmer, she has the perfect family, and Her grades are great. But then threes still trying to figure out who she is a she wants. What she wants is what she gets.

Spencer has always had to live up to her big sister in this book. Her sister Melissa has always been her parent’s favorite. It’s quite obvious. Spencer is really completive and trys to be better than Melissa in everyway. Better grades, better boyfriends, more APS classes, School president. She wants to be better at everything than Melissa. But this just might tear their sisterly friendship up.

Flawless by Sara Shepard, has definitely made me think twice about things. Especially one thing; Choose your friends carefully. The one thing that made me like this book was the fact that there was one more character, but you’ll never be able to figure out who this character is. The girls get these messages/ notes/ texts every day. There always signed –A, and they are all about the girls secrets that they only told Ali, It has to be Ali but messing with girls right?
3 yeas after her being missing, the police find Ali dead in her own backyard.
These notes keep coming and coming.
Who could it be? You’ll have to read the book!

Among the Brave by Margaret Petersen Haddix reviewed by Kaleb C.

Among the Brave by Margret Petrson Hadix is a great book. There is suspense, action, and humor. The setting is in the Nebraska, in the not so distant future. This future is one that is very frightening.
The main character is named Trey. Trey is a 17 year old young man who is very adventurous. He is loyal to his friends and trusts them very well. He is a third child or a “shadow child.” He is at a camp where many shadow children hide. They are evacuating the camp. His friends are captured by the Population Police, who are in charge of making sure that there are no shadow children. So he must make a plan.
After a fierce shoot out with the Population Police, Trey gets a uniform so he can get into the Population Police headquarters. He makes it into HQ safely. He must make a plan. When getting lunch, he runs into an old friend. Her name is Margery, and she too is a shadow child. Together they find a solution, to put a stop to the Population Police. But, they run into many unexpected problems.
This book is a very good book. There is suspense, action, and humor. This is one of my favorite books. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes action, suspense or just a good book. I would rate this book an 8.5 out of 10 because it is somewhat hard to understand at times. Read this book and find out for yourself what happens to Trey and Margery.

Everlost by Neal Shusterman reviewed by Alex H.

In Neal Shusterman’s book, Everlost, Nick and Allie don’t survive the car crash, but there souls are stuck Halfway Between life and in some sort of world called Everlost. The children are stuck in this world were you feel nothing just, you can’t see the living world clearly, but the other lost souls of children and places that have been lost forever will always be there in Everlost. Now I will take you through the journey of Everlost were you will se the horrors of death and the never ending bond of friendship.

First of we will start to explain the setting. The setting of this book is very unique it is a world where only the dead can thrive, but not just all dead things only dead children between the ages one through seventeen can live there. Everlost is placed on the earth where life is still ticking around you but the real world is blurred and when a soul tries to be a part of the living world he or she sinks to the center of the earth and can never escape. The only part of the earth were these helpless souls can walk on solid ground are spots called dead zones. Dead zones are place where people have died or a whole forest has been burnt down. The most famous dead zone in Everlost is one that the world will never forget, The Twin Towers of New York city. As many of you can see the World of Everlost has a very unique environment surrounding it.

The characters of this book are very unique, the two main characters, Nick and Allie
Die in the same car crash in the state of New York. They are dead but since they are in Everlost they do not believe there dead. Then they meet a character that has been in Everlost so long He has forgot his name. So they give him the name leaf because he likes to swing from tree to tree. Then there is the character named Marry, Marry is a leader of the Everlost children and is very kind and loving. Also on of the villains in the book is a monster that they call the Mcguil. The Mcguil is a monster creature that kidnaps lost souls and has him work on his ghost ship. The characters in Everlost are very unique that make you want to keep on reading till you finish.

I would highly recommend reading the book Everlost

Maximum Ride reviewed by Alejandro R.

Have you have ever been on an adventure? Well Maximum Ride by James Patterson has a lot of adventure. With mythical people and a lot of action with it, it is a fun and adventuress book. Max and a few of his friends escape from this lab that is experimenting on them. They escape so they can find their parents. This book is full of adventure, action and friendship.
The setting of the book is where it all happens. This is where the gang runs to find out about their parents. Also running away from the erasers. The setting is in Washington D.C. the nations capital. Max and his friends try to find their parents in this big city.
The main characters of this book are Max the leader of the group and he is fourteen Fang is also fourteen, and Angel is six. There also is a dog they found. There is also a group of these wolf like people that have wings called Erasers that are trying to hunt down Max and his friends and kill them for escaping the lab. Also the erasers are trying to kill them is so they don’t tell people about the secret lab. The character I like then most is Max because he is like the leader of the group. He watches over his friends and always makes sure they are okay. He always seems to know what to do.
The plot of this book is that Max really wants to find his parents. He doesn’t know where his parents are because they were taken when they were young and their parents weren’t in the house they lived in. He was tired of being experimented on so he escaped the lab with a few of his friends. Also they are worried because they are in a big city and don’t know where their next meal is going to come from or where they are going to sleep for the night. They are being followed by a group of wolf like people sent to kill them for escaping. They have a lot of fights with each other. Max and his friends always seem to win. Does Max find his parents? Read the book and find out.
It is wrong to take your family away from each other but Max and his friends are trying to find their parents. I would tell people who like adventure, action and a book about friendship to read this book. It is a very good book. Read and find out if Max ever finds his parents and what happens with the Erasers.

The Floating Island reviewed by Carrie M.

Have you ever read a book that you weren’t quite interested in, but something about it catches your attention and you have to finish it? Maybe you have, but I’m sure the experience was nothing like Elizabeth Haydon’s book, The Floating Island. The Floating Island is one of the most intriguing books I have ever read. It is full of mystery, has wonderful characters, and an excellent plot.
Ven Polypheme has just turned 50 years old, young for a Nain. Nain’s tend to live underground and hate the sea, but not Ven. Ven’s father owns a ship making business, and each ship must be tested on the sea. Ven’s brothers rig the sticks that choose who goes out to sea with the ship, and lucky for Ven, it’s him. Ven soons find himself battling Fire Pirates, being saved by a merrow, on another ship run by a very interesting captain, and even arrested for a time. On his voyage Ven sets foot on an extremely rare island, the Floating Island. This island is extremely rare, for it travels with the wind.
In favor of the new captain, Ven gets a room at an Inn (the captains wife’s Inn) with his newly found friend, Char, at a mysterious Crossroads. This Crossroads is not ordinary, people are always getting hurt and even worse, disappearing.
Next, this book has fantastic characters. The characters in The Floating Island are some of the most realistic characters I have ever read about. They are mischievous, clever, and never boring. Ven’s encounter with a merrow (mermaid) becomes one the the things Ven most looks forward to. The merrow is constantly trying to get Ven to find a fisherman that can cut gills, so Ven can explore the sea with her. Ven even meets some unlikely friends such as Ina, a young girl that has no real home, no manners, and is always stealing. Ven can’t stand her. But this unlikely friendship happens when something horrible happens to Ina, something only Ven can fix. Ven also gets a very unthinkable visit with the King. The King is a very down-to-earth man. He is always taking a different look on life, seeing the true magic. He teaches Ven there is always something more than what you plainly see. There is always truth. He even offers Ven a job that requires Ven to go out into the world, and see the truth, then report everything back to the King.
Lastly, this book has an absolutely outstanding plot. Throughout the entire book Ven is trying to find a way home, and a way to help out everyone. He learns what it means to truly live, what it means to have fun and believe in himself. Will Ven take the King’s job offer? Or will he go back home to his family? Ven’s voyage may even change your outlook on life.
