The Reptile Room by Lemony Snicket review by Thomas R.

The reptile room by Lemony Snicket has so many topics I can write about. The 3 kids Violet the oldest, Klaus the brains, and Sunny the youngest. Thier parents died in a fire 2 years ago. Some people would say it is very sad because it talks about the Baudelaire’s dead parents. I would say this sensational book will take you through feeling you will never have thought you had, and show you to be thankful for everything you have.
The setting is in Hazy Harbor. A city where it always rains and it has nothing to do exciting in it. The town makes every one feel kind of sad because of the weather that has no sunshine and all clouds. Would you like to live in a place where all it does is rain and the sun never comes out?
The main characters are the most important part of the book. The 3 Baudelaire orphans move from home to home. Violet is the oldest with a very good instinct for inventing. Klaus the middle aged is a very smart kid who loves to read. And last but not least Sunny the youngest that bites things constantly with her razor sharp teeth. The Baudelaire’s take you through adventures as if you were in the room yourself.
This book takes you through feelings that you would normally feel in real life not in a story. The man who the orphans stayed with in the first book secretly dresses up as Uncle Monty’s assistant. Uncle Monty was planning on taking the orphans to Cuba with him to research snakes. That is until the unexpected Count Olaf kills Uncle Monty with snake venom that he keeps in the Reptile room (a giant room filled with reptiles to the top). Then Count Olaf tries to make them travel to Cuba with them so he can kill the orphans where no one will find out. But will a long time friend come back from the dust and save them? Or will the Baudelaire’s bodies be left on the cold beaches of Cuba to rot?

Lord of the Rings:The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien Review by Alex C.

Who do you think is the best author of our time?
Some would say J.K. Rowling or Christopher Paolini.
I believe that the best author of our time was J.R.R Tolkien because of his books titled: The Lord of the Rings.

In this epic saga, Tolkien paints his words so vividly
that you are half afraid that the pages will come alive!
He has mystery and suspense on every page and his descriptions of places Like Mordor or Minas Morgul leave you
gasping for air. The amount of detail he puts into his writing is phenomenal. His characters are larger than life,
his enemies fierce and terrifying and his climaxes are nothing
short of amazing!

My favorite character in the series has been Gollum if only because of his multiple personality disorder.
He believes he is both Gollum the cave creature and Sméagol:
The kind river person.
Several other reasons include: His maddening
thirst for the ring, his anger toward anything happy
and his dislike of cooked food.

My least favorite character thus far has been
Legolas because of his airy, almost superior actions and dialogue. Another thing I dislike about him is that he adds no sense of adventure or humor; therefore he adds nothing except a being for Gimli the dwarf, to argue with.

In conclusion, I believe that the Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring was an awesome tale of mystery and adventure, of love and suspense and finally, of magic and wonder. This is why I love Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring and why I think you should read it.

The Desperado who Stole Baseball by John H. Ritter reviewed by Michael L.

The Desperado who Stole Baseball

Have you ever read a book that really caught your eye? Some might say Heat by Dave Lupica because of the suspense and storyline. The best books I have ever read have realistic characters, storyline that I could relate to, and have a great setting. The book The Desperado who Stole Baseball by John H. Ritter contains all these characteristics.
There were many characters that served a great role in making this book one of the best books ever. First, Jack was the main character. He had charisma, heart, and a sense of humor. He traveled all the way from “St. Louie” to a little town in California called Dillontown. He lives his life off of baseball. Next, Billy “The Kid” Henry is a wily Desperado who has been hunted around the U.S.A. for being convicted as a murderer. Finally, Long John Dillon, the founder of Dillontown, is a great ballplayer / manager. He plays and manages the Dillontown Nine, a group of ballplayers who are either criminals or people who couldn’t make it to the big leagues because of financial problems. John Dillon was a run away slave from St. Louie.
The setting is a fairly new town in California founded by Long John Dillon called Dillontown. Dillontown is a town of about 100 people or so and all the people live, eat, and breathe baseball. All the saloons are named after baseball strategies or plays. It is kind of a hostile environment because of its rowdy citizens. It is smack dab in the middle of the desert. During the book the year is the late 1800’s. Although many slaves were still owned, any escapees could come and settle here as their home without being treated badly.
The Desperado who Stole Baseball has many different problems that relate to the same storyline. The plot however is all one topic: Baseball. Jack is trying to find the little town of Dillontown to finally meet his long lost uncle, John Dillon. Jack has a very wide imagination and thinks he has thought up some great situation plays for the Dillontown Nine that is famous for being good at baseball. On his adventure to Dillontown, he meets Billy Henry who didn’t introduce himself as Billy “The Kid” at first. The two newly found friends arrived in Dillontown just in time to audition for the two newly opened spots on the baseball team’s line-up. The team has a huge tournament to find out who the actual best team in America really is. Will Jack and Bill help the Nine, or will Billy be caught and thrown in prison?
If I had a choice I would make all the classrooms in America read this book. I highly recommend this book to any person who likes baseball and suspense or just likes to read a good book. This book contains thrill, suspense, humor, and even some history. All these qualities make this a great book.

“Max” Reviewed by Amanda H.

What makes a book so enjoyable? Some might say it is the adventure in a book, others might say it is the way the author paints a picture in your head. A good book is filled with a good setting, interesting characters and a good plot.

Max is a very good book for portraying a setting, in the book Max you feel as if you are in the story. The bird kids do air shows in various places. But they always have to be on the look out for the M-Geeks. Once Max’s mom gets kidnapped they venture off under the islands of Hawaii to try and rescue Max’s mom. When I say under the islands of Hawaii I mean it, they have to go in a submarine under the islands of Hawaii to try to rescue Max’s mom. When they are under the islands of Hawaii they are gently gliding over the ocean floor. Since they are on the ocean floor you know it is dark, and they see some animals on their journey.

Max is full of interesting characters, the main characters are bird kids for crying out load. The Bird kids are Max, Angel, Iggy, Gazzy, Fang, Nudge and their dog Total they are the heroes in Max. The villains are Mr. Chu and all of his M-Geek robots. In the book Max, Mr. Chu kidnaps Max’s mom. To help save Max’s mom many people join in, like Dr. Bridget Dwyer, and a member of the U.S. Navy come to help. Max is surely full of lively characters.

The plot of Max is very suspenseful. The bird kids were enjoying one air show, of many air shows, when they got shot at. Once they got shot at they were
leery of doing another air show. Then their flying dog Total got hit, so they stopped doing air shows and went into hiding. The bird kids came out of hiding and Max started to spend time with her mom and half-sister. Then suddenly Max’s mom got kidnapped. The bird kids put a group together to help them find her mom. The group figures out that Max’s mom is being held under water, off the coast of Hawaii. They go to Hawaii, and go on a sub-marine to find Max’s mom. They run into some obstacles along the way.

I would highly recommend this book I thoroughly enjoyed it. Max is full of suspense, action and drama. Will they find Max’s mom? If so will they rescue Max’s mom in time? You’ll have to read the book to find out.

HIVE by Mark Walden reviewed by Mel G.

HIVE
What makes a good book? Some might say one with filled with action and suspense. The best book has realistic characters, interesting conflicts, and a strong message theme.
I am reading the book HIVE by Mark Walden. The setting of this book is in a dormant volcano that was turned into a school. In the school they teach students from around the world to become villains. It is easy to picture the school the way Mark Walden describes it. The school was carved from black granite and there are many beautiful statues.
This book has three main characters Otto, Wing, and Dr. Nero. The characters are very easy to relate to because the all grew up in poor and rich environments, and in orphanages. The characters are easy to believe real because the do what most people can do. Otto is a brilliant young boy with a promising future. Wing is a kung fu expert, and dr. Nero is the head of the school.
The plot of this book is the kids from around the world get captured to come to hive, the school, and are taught to become the next super villains of the world. But Otto and Wing do not want this. They gather other kids that believe as they do and try to escape from hive. But one thing they don’t know is that Dr. Nero knows about the escape plan. Then as they are about to be captured by Dr. Nero a mutated plant comes out of nowhere and starts terrorizing the school.
I would definitely recommend this book to all my friends. This book is very action packed and filled with suspense. So next time you are at the library see if they have HIVE by Mark Walden.

Uglies series by Scott Westerfield. Reviewed by Shalynn M.

Do you have a favorite book? Some might say that their favorite book is Twilight. My favorite book or book series is the Uglies series by Scott Westerfield.
In the book Uglies the author makes you feel like you could almost be there with the characters. There are scenes where Tally Youngblood (main girl) is hover boarding through the rapids and when she gets back she has scratches and bruises on her face. You can just picture how that would look and feel. Also, when Tally is pulling a prank and she’s hiding from the “cops” and she runs into Shay (who turns out to be her best friend). The way the author describes the scenes makes you feel like your there or you could be there. The setting of this book is all over the place. It goes from Tally hover boarding to her being in her dorm room with Shay, but the way the author describes it makes you feel like your actually there.
Tally Youngblood is the main character. Her personality is kind and caring. Her ex-best friend is Peris. After Peris turned pretty, Tally was alone until she met a girl named Shay. Shay and Tally become best friends. Shay is kind of a bossy type of girl and always wants her way. Tally is kind and caring.
When kids turn twelve they are moved away from their parents and into a dorm where they feed you and where you go to school. You stay there until you are sixteen. After you are sixteen you turn pretty. That’s where doctors do an operation that make you turn beautiful. It has always been Tally Youngblood’s dream to become pretty but, when her friend Shay runs away she is forced to go and find her.
The book makes you feel like your actually there, it makes connections with you and the characters, and the book shows you another kind of world. Those are the reasons why I like the book Uglies.

Night by Elie Wiesel Reviewed by Carter B.

Do you have a favorite book? Some people say there are two many good books to choose from while others might say they don’t read that much. My favorite book, however, is Night by Elie Wiesel because I think the setting, plot, and characters are all very interesting.
The setting of Night is very interesting. The setting of the book is in 40s and 50s during the Holocaust in Europe. The author really made me feel that I was in the snowing nights and days running with the Jews on trails or in the small ghettos feeling closed in by the barbed wire fences and armed officers. While reading this book whenever I closed my eyes I would picture the setting.
The book Night also has a great plot. The book is about a Jewish family that lives in Europe during the Holocaust. It is a story about how they are separated at camps and how the father and son go through extremely hard times together. The biggest problem I think they face is getting though the hard times and staying alive. The father and son have to do hard work and make hard decisions just to stay alive like when the family doesn’t know if they should try to hide or if they should run and escape the camps and ghettos. The Holocaust and constant threat of death changes everybody involved in it. I think this book wasn’t ever boring and I always had trouble stopping while reading this book.
This great book also had well developed characters. Since the story is written by the teenage boy in the true story you really understand each character. The boy, Elie, has to do more than any other teenage boy should have to do to live. Even though his religious beliefs give him very little privileges than others he stays true to them. He and his father are very strong people to stay true to their beliefs after all the pain it caused them. When Elie would see horrific things and go through hard challenges and would still focus on what he needed to do and what his dad needed to do it showed me he was focused and determined.
I recommend this book to anybody who likes a book that will never bore you. It has great characters, a great setting, and a great plot. The book Night by Elie Wiesel is a great book, and I think you should read it.

May Bird and The Ever After By: Jodi Lynn Anderson Review By: Rachel F

Have you ever read a good book? What makes that book good? Some might say because of the adventure. Others might say because of the romance. Well, May Bird and The Ever After is one of the best books I’ve ever read. It has suspense, adventure, and the author describes everything so well, I felt like I was there right along beside the characters.

May Bird and The Ever After takes place starting in a small town in West Virginia. May lives with her mother and cat in a white house just outside Briery Swamp. Briery Swamp is a lake in the middle of a forest. It is a very dark and dreary place, where there are noises and shadows everywhere you turn. Later in the book May ends up in The Ever After. The Ever After is a star a million miles from earth where people go once they have died. The Ever After is a big world filled with ghosts, spirits, specters, and anything else dead. It is very dark and very dangerous. Nobody is safe there.

May Ellen Bird is the main character of my book. May has big brown eyes and short, thick black hair. She is a bright, adventurous, and a very creative girl. She is a live one who gets sucked into The Ever After. As the author talks about May, I feel as if I really know her. May lives at home with her mom and Somber Kitty. Somber Kitty is a very brave, very hairless cat and he is May’s best and only friend. Along May’s path she is helped by her house ghost, Pumpkin. He is a very weird creature, with a big head little hair, and a lop-sided smile. Pumpkin travels with May on her journey.

In May Bird and The Ever After, a young girl named May is sucked into a very different world, where you go when your dead. But, the truth is, May isn’t dead yet. She is a live one, as they call it, and she shouldn’t be there. In The Ever After there is a creature called the Bodey. His job is to get rid of everyone that shouldn’t be in The Ever After. He has heard that May has entered and he is now after her. May is in a lot of trouble. She is trying to get out of The Ever After, and boy it is a struggle. She meets and loses many friends along the way. She is being attacked and faces many problems.

The whole time I was reading this book I have felt like I have been along side with May. Traveling with her in her struggles to get out of The Ever After. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves to read or doesn’t. This is a very good book. I never wanted to put it down. I felt like I saw what they saw, smelt what they smelt, and felt what they felt.

Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyer Reviewed by Morgan M.

What makes a good book? Some may say that a comedy, Romance, Or Mystery are the most entertaining. For me, I think that romance is the best, that is why I read Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyer.
The setting of Breaking Dawn, is in Forks, Washington. Fork’s is a very gloomy and rainy town, but for vampires, It is a perfect paradise. The year is around 2007. Bella often goes to La Push to see her best friend Jake, Who is a werewolf.
Breaking Dawn has many very important characters. Bella is the main character in these books. She falls in love with a vampire, and has to make a lot of hard decisions. Bella’s father, Charlie, Has a big role in all 4 books because he keeps her in line, and helps her with troubles. There is also the whole Cullen family, such as, Carlisle, Esme, Alice, Rosalie, Emmet, Jasper, And Edward. Jake is Bella’s best friend, And was always there for her when Edward left.
Breaking Dawn is a romance about a young human named Bella, falling in love with a vampire. Edward Cullen. Bella finds herself facing many problems in this book, including giving birth to a half vampire child, Renessme. She is eventually turned into a vampire, But more problems erupt. The Volturi, A vampire Army, has set out to kill the Cullen’s, And the newly born girl, Renessme. Bella would do anything to keep her baby safe. She learns to fight, But Edward isn’t too happy about that. Is love for Bella is unconditional and he couldn’t bare to see her or Renessme get hurt.
Breaking Dawn has a very romantic, yet suspicious affect that most readers feel when they read it. Breaking Dawn was by far, one of my favorite books to read. If you would like to know the ending to this story, you will have to pick up the set, And start. But be careful, these books are very hard to put down.

Travel Team By Mike Lupica Review by Ryan L.

Travel Team

Have you ever read a really good book? Some would say that good books are the ones that leave you with a lot of questions or filled with suspense. The best books have are the ones that make you feel like you are in the story, and you can see and hear everything that is going on very clearly.
I read the book Travel Team By Mike Lupica. The setting of this book takes place in Middletown, New York, in the twenty-first century. Most of the time in Middletown it is at the main characters house or on the basketball court. I play basketball, so I can picture everything very clearly on the basketball court. It makes me feel like I am in the stands watching the game.
This book has five main characters in it. They are Daniel Walker, Ali Walker, Richard Walker, Will Stoddard, and Tess Hewwitt. Daniel is the main character out of all of them. Will and Tess are his friends and Ali and Richard are his parents. Danny lived for basketball. He played it when it was snowing or ninety-five degrees, it didn’t matter to him. They seem like real people to me because they do things that real humans do, they do good at things, and also make mistakes. I like these characters because most of them are my age, they are twelve or thirteen years old. I especially like Will because he is into sports and always has a good time, no matter where he is or what he is doing.
Danny is a twelve-year-old-boy who LOVES to play basketball. When Danny doesn’t make the seventh-grade Travel Team, he is very disappointed. He keeps wondering why he didn’t make it, since he was so much better than most of the kids who made it. It turns out he was too small to be on the team, and that they wanted to have a tall team that year. So, will Danny make it on a team this year? You can find out by reading the book, Travel Team, By Mike Lupica.
I would definitely recommend reading this book if you are into sports. Go to a local library and check it out, borrow it from a friend, or go out and buy it from a bookstore nearby. This was one of the best books that I have ever read.

The Faerie Door written by B.E. Maxwell Review by Chris H.

Have you ever read a book that you liked so much that each chapter you just want to read to the next chapter? Some might say no. While others would just start naming off books that they’ve read. The book The Faerie Door was a mystery what was going to happen next, making it very good to read.
In the book The Faerie Door written by B.E. Maxwell the setting differs. Elliot is a boy that lives in New York near the nineteen sixties. Victoria is a girl that lives around the eighteen nineties. Elliot is a poor boy in the poor neibor hood of New York. Victoria lives in the richest family with a huge mantion. Then they switch in and out of faerie land. Faerie land is a magical land you have to teleport to get there. The land consists of Good Faeries and Bad Faeries. There are castles and war zones. Mystical forests and creepy swamps.
In the story Elliot and Victoria are the main characters. Elliot is afraid of almost every thing and he is very quiet. Victoria makes up for that however. She is very out going an brave there is nothing out there she cant face. Victoria is a very likeable character in making the story more enjoyable
The plot of the story is very interesting. In the faerie world the Bad Faeries have decided to take the passageway to our world and use our wepons agenst us. So the Good Faeries put rings in our world the rings open a door to the Faerie Door, which opens a door to Faerie Land, and Elliot and Victoria both find one.
I would recommend this book to people that enjoy fiction and suspense.

Code Orange by Cooney Reviewed by Emily E.

Have you ever read a book that you love and can’t wait to see what happens next? Some people might say that they can’t find a book and that they don’t like to read. Others might say that they love to read and can never put a book down. That’s why I read Code Orange because you are never board. You always want to see what is going to happen next.
In Code Orange the setting takes place in New York, the craziest city in the United States. The time period that this book took place in was right after 9/11 so everyone was really sad. So everyone was watching behind every corner at every street. When I was reading this book I can picture a lot of things in my head about what she says. For example, I can see when he running down the sidewalk, out of breathe and looking for water. She does a really good job on details. The author, Caroline B. Cooney also makes me feel like I am a bird in the middle of New York and watching everything that goes on. I really like that in books.
The main character in my book is Mitty Blake, he is doing a report on small pox. What it was and how they killed a lot of people when it was going around. Mitty has a girlfriend named Olivia and she is a big part of the book also, Mitty has a best friend Drake that is always by his side and is a big part of the book also. I like all of these characters because they are all about my age, and I can relate to them in a lot of ways. For example Mitty doesn’t like school very much but he is very smart and never gives up on what he is doing. Like when he was doing a report on small pox he liked what he was learning about and would not stop doing research on it. I can relate to Mitty the best because he is like me in all of these reasons.
The plot of the book is very good. Mitty is doing a report on small pox and he finds these scabs that are about 100 years old. He decides to tough them. So then he thought to himself what if I get it now. So he read up on the signs of it. Now he thinks that he has it.
I would recommend this book if you are looking for a good read and something to never put down. This is a very good book.

The End of Forever By: Lurlene Mcdaniel Reviewed by Jamie C.

Have you ever gotten lost in a book? Some may say no, reading is a waste of time. I might’ve been one of those people, until I set my eyes on The End of Forever. The End of Forever is a great book due to the setting, the characters, and the plot.
First, the setting of this book varies. During the first part of the book the setting is in a school, on a stage, and at their home. The second part of the book the characters are mainly in the hospital. The school this book takes place at is a school for girls. The characters in this book are not as high-class as the other students but they manage to get by. The portion where the characters are in the hospital isn’t necessarily what you would call frightening, but it’s crowded and silent. Other than the piercing voices of the doctors and nurses no one is really in chatting mood.
Next, the characters. My favorite, Amy, Is Erin’s sister. They are both very close in age, but nothing alike. Amy is outgoing, hilarious, and just goes with the flow. Erin is very serious, she’s clean and tidy, and she’s also very up tight if you ask me. Amy is the type of girl who isn’t worried about her future, she just lives her life. She’s very dramatic, and her room is a pigsty, but everyone seems to love her. Erin, her room is organized, just like she is. Erin loves dancing, just as much as her sister Amy loves acting. Though these sisters are completely opposite, they both share something really special.
Finally, the plot of this story begins in such a way that you will never guess, in your wildest dreams what the ending may be. As I said before Amy and Erin had their differences, they didn’t always get along. The night of Amy and Erin’s very important show, Amy asks Erin if she can take the car to get some extra sodas for the cast. Erin was a little worried but gave the keys to her anyway. When Amy wasn’t there right away, Erin was beginning to wonder. Amy is always late, so Erin wasn’t too worried about her absence. But as the time grew longer, Erin’s patience grew shorter. She went out looking for Amy with Amy’s boyfriend, Travis. It was a long and frightening drive to the hospital when Erin had found out what happened to her sister. What will her parents choose to do? How long will Amy be at the hospital? Will Erin ever be able to forgive herself for giving Amy the keys?
In conclusion, this book kept me guessing. The End of Forever got me hooked. I got lost in the wonderfully fearsome story of the two sisters. I recommend reading this book. It may be hard to relate to if you’re a boy, seeing how this book is about sisters. Girls will really enjoy reading this book. It had it’s ups and downs, and it just might make you cry, but trust me, it’s worth the tears.

Angels and Demons Dan Brown Review by Nathan D

Have you ever read a really interesting book? Some people may say that there are not any interesting books out there. Some may say most interesting books are too thick. In the book Angels and Demons, there are the characters, the setting, and the plot.
In the book Angels and Demons, there are a bunch of characters brought in. Robert Langdon is a historian at Harvard University. He is also a single man in his late 30’s, and swims every day to stay in good shape. He gets a phone call in the early morning from Maximillion Kholer, who is the director of a large company called CERN. Vittoria Vetra is in physics at the company CERN. All these people are brought together by this big plot from an ancient satanic cult to get back at the Catholic Church.
The setting starts out in the early morning of a nice day in Boston. Then the main character Robert Langdon is flown on a jet to Switzerland, where the company CERN resides. It is now about mid afternoon when Robert and Vittoria are flown on another jet to the Vatican City. This is where they spend the rest of the day and late into the night. In the Vatican they get taken to churches throughout the entire area of Rome. Some of the places they end up at are St. Peter’s Square, and the Sistine Chapel.
In the book Angels and Demons, the plot is very confusing, and it is at times hart to understand. Robert Langdon wakes up to a call in the early morning from a man named Maxamillion Kholer. He is told of a murder from an old satanic cult called the Illuminati. This group has been believed to be extinct for more than century. Robert is taken to Scotland to look over the body. The man that was murdered has a brand Illuminati across his chest, the brand having perfect symmetry. This is a big clue that the Illuminati did not go inactive and are on the move. The scientist that was murdered had discovered a brilliant new technology called Antimatter. Which when coming in contact with matter could be like a nuclear explosion. Robert Langdon meets the daughter of this scientist, her name is Vittoria. They are both sent to the Vatican City to find antimatter that was stolen when her father was murdered. When they get there, they are sent on a wild goose chase to solve a riddle from the Illuminati. The four Il Preferiti, the four cardinals that are preferred candidates for the next Pope, are being murdered and branded with Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. These are the four elements of science when the Illuminati were high up in power. They also have to search for the antimatter before it goes off and destroys the Vatican.
This book is a great book, and it explains a lot about the church history. It takes a little time to read, and the reader has to be at the skill level to comprehend what is going on. I would suggest this book to anyone that likes confusing books, or anyone that likes reading big books filled with a ton of interesting points.

The Lost Island of Tamarind: by Nadia Aguiar reviewed by Michaela T.

Have you ever read a book, which once you were done you said, “Wow what a great book”? Some might say, “Yes many times I have done that.” others might say “no, I hate reading”. How I would answer that question is yes and that book is called The Lost Island of Tamarind: by Nadia Aguiar.
In this book the main characters are three children (Maya, Simon, and Penny) their parents and two friends they meet in Tamarind (Helix and his bird). The book is written mainly in the view and feelings of Maya, who becomes the mother of her infant sister and her eleven year old, brother Simon. When Maya is only about fourteen. I can relate to Maya because I am around her age and it would be really hard to take care of my siblings all by myself.
Maya’s parents are scientists who study life underwater. When they were out sailing in a place they had never been before a huge storm came out of nowhere. Maya’s parents went up to control the ship when they were knocked overboard. When Maya woke up, in the morning, her parents weren’t there. Luckily Maya was able to navigate the boat to a nearby island. When they landed they met a kid named Helix who helped them to get closer to Greater Tamarind where they would be able to find their parents easier. Along their way they met some different kind of people, who were a lot different from what we are used to such as, mermaids, giants, trolls, and many other fictional characters.
Tamarind is a humungous island filled with smaller islands called the lesser islands all surrounding the biggest one of them all, which is Greater Tamarind. All the islands are covered in weird little villages and forestry. All the different forests have their own dangers, such as the child stealer who when children wandered off she would send her monkeys to capture them and bring them to a camp, where they weren’t fed often at all and were kept there until they die. Also another danger is animals that randomly attack. And also the terrible weather, rockslides, and volcano. Later in the book Maya acts like she is the princess to help find her parents but when the king figures it out he sends his guards after them, adding a new thing to look out for, They must also watch out for ,horrifying pirates who want their ship, The Pamela Jane.
This book is one of those thrillers that when you read all of the stories within the story you are amazed at all that they go though. The Lost Island Of Tamarind is a great book.

Starcross by Phillip Reeve Reviewed by Bryan J

Have you ever read a really good book? Some might say that a romance novel or a sports book is the best. The really good books have an interesting setting, a various amount of characters, and a good plot.
It is important to have a good setting for every book. The book Starcross by Phillip Reeve does a great job of having an interesting setting. The setting is far in the future in the year 2156 in outer space. Since I will not be living that long. The author does a great job of making it seem real. There is an earth in the book, now the Europeans own almost all the land. It is spilt between the French and the German. The people are in an asteroid from Jupiter. They do not live on Jupiter but they live in a different asteroid belt. They can fly on ships from planet to planet. The setting really made me interested in this book.
Characters are in my option the most important part of a good story. There are many different characters in this book. It describes all of the them to make you feel like they are part of our world. The main characters were the Mumbsy family of Myrtle, Art and their mom. Art is the one who the story is actually about it is kind of like a journal that he writes. He and Myrtle never get along they always fight. Art is around 13 years old. He loves to explore and find new things. Myrtle is 16 years old. She thinks she controls every one and she always has to look good. She can’t be in public if she is not beautiful. Their mom is around 2,000 years old. She is a special type of person that cannot die. They also know this pirate that helps them survive in the asteroid. His name is Jack Havok. Jack is 16 years old and he is very brave and he likes to impress other people. The four characters I mention met in the first book of this series, which is called Larklight. Not all the characters in their world are good. There were two villains, with a group of hats called Moobs. There was always a problem for the good guys. The two people was Mr. Tifter the man who lured them into Starcross, and Mrs. Buedegard who was a French spy that tried to capture them and make them work for the French. The hats were a group of black slush that could transform themselves into any shape or form. They tried to suck the brain cells of people and by doing that they could control you.
The plot is what makes the stories interesting. In this story the Mumbsy family gets invited to go to a new hotel. At this new hotel they get attacked by a group of hats, which are called mobs. Through the story Myrtle and Jack escape from the hotel, then they go to a different asteroid so they could not be found. Later, they came back from their hiding spots and go and try to save Art and her Mom. The reason they wanted the Mumbys is because the mom could make you be able to transport your self to a different world.
This is a really good book. This book covers all of the required information. If you are interested in action type of books then this is the book for you. It is funny and full of action every chapter is leaves you hanging. Also it gives you a good laugh. I defiantly recommend this book. Starcross is one of the best books I have read.

The Deep Range by Arthur C. Clarke. Review by Skyler R.

What makes a good book? Some might say a funny, scary or a romance. Well I think that suspense makes a good book. That’s why I read The Deep Range by Arthur C. Clarke.
The setting was in a variety of places. For the majority it took place deep under the Pacific Ocean, where it was pitch black dark and you couldn’t see a thing and where a couple sea monsters are lurking around. Next for the other part of the story it took place in the base. It was right over the Great Barrier Reef. Finally it took place very little on the surface of the Pacific Ocean were all you could see for miles and miles was water and occasionally a whale surfacing.
There were only a few main characters, but they played an important role. First there was Don. He started and ended as a first warden. He trained Franklin in many different types of submarines and also was his partner in a couple of missions. Next there was Franklin. He started out as a trainee and moved up to a first warden. He actually was first an astronaut and had such a bad accident he couldn’t return to space or his family, which happened to live on Mars, again. Finally there is Indra. She didn’t play a big part, but she was an important person. She was Franklin’s new wife. She also worked at the base as someone who was almost like a marine biologist when Franklin showed up.
The plot consisted of a few parts, and there were a few different sections in the book. First you hear about how Franklin was being trained by Don and how he met Indra. Next there was a short part about how Franklin had remembered being in space, and he was extremely sad and he ran away. Next there was when Franklin and Don go on missions together after not seeing each other for quite a while.
In conclusion I would defiantly recommend this book. It was extremely suspenseful and had a lot of detail. It also had an easy to follow plot but still had but had some very unexpected parts. So this book is well worth reading.

Hugh Glass, Mountain Man by Robert M. McClung Review by Cameron B

Have you ever read a great book that you didn’t want to put down? Some might say no reading is boring or the Harry Potter books. Well I read Hugh Glass Mountain Man by Robert M. McClung I couldn’t put it down. I thought this book was great because of the setting, characters, and the plot.
The first great part about this book is the setting that took place. The whole book had a setting in the land of the trappers in the 1800’s. Things like rivers and open land was surrounding Hugh Glass and everyone else, along with Indians. The setting was nice because it could be so empty and then you would be amazed what could be there and how to use it. The setting was also a great part of the book because it seemed so relaxing just to have quiet every once in a while.
The second part I liked about the book is the characters. All of the characters seemed to be strong people, but they could change so fast. Hugh Glass was one of my favorites because he had so much drive and perseverance. He would not stop if he wanted to get something. I thought Hugh Glass was such a strong person so I admire him. Another one of the characters that interests me is Jim Bridger and Fitz. They taught me a lesson about never giving up on somebody and courage. In one part of the story they leave a fallen friend just to be safe from the closing in Indians. I thought Hugh Glass was such a strong person so I admire him. However Fitz and Jim seem good at first but soon made a mistake to haunt them for the rest of their lives, leaving a friend behind.
The third piece of the book that I liked was the plot. The book was about a trapper, Hugh Glass, going out with a group to the land to go and start trapping beavers. One day they were hunting and a bear had crept up on Hugh and mauled him. Everybody in the group with him thought he would be dead but he hung on to his life. Many days passed as Hugh barely breathed. Soon the leader said they should leave, but two people need to stay with Hugh. Those two people were Jim and Fitz. After days of watching and taking care of Hugh, Indian signs were spotted. In this country the Indians were deadly. So Fitz made the decision to leave Hugh and try to save there own lives. Hugh eventually gained enough strength to move and crawl. He started to crawl all the way to a fort to try to get his revenge on Fitz and Jim Bridger after leaving him for dead. But does he ever get to them?
The setting, characters, and plot were all great things about this book. I highly recommend this book it was very exciting. This book can also teach you a great lesson on courage and pride.

A Killing Freeze By Lynn Hall Review by Kolby F.

Have you ever read a good mystery book? Some people might say no but others might say yes. A Killing Freeze had a fantastic setting, wonderful characters, and interesting plot.
In A Killing Freeze the setting takes place in a small, snowy town in Minnesota. In this town they are have a huge snow festival and some horrible things go wrong. When I was reading this I could picture the cold weather that is very similar to Wyoming winter weather. When I closed my eyes I could see the huge snowdrifts piled along the road and every now and again a deer peeking out of the forest. Plus, at the festival I could see the ice sculptors at work, kids making snowmen, and dog sleds getting ready for the race they were participating in. I really felt like I was there.
There were lots of characters in the book. The main character was Claire. When I was reading this book I thought of her as a real person. Claire and her dad run a snowmobile and bike shop in their small town. Claire is an 18-year-old girl living alone with her dad after, her mother left them after she was born. She has a love for wilderness and that’s why I think her bond with her dad is so strong. When Claire discovers her murdered neighbor, she has to keep on going to help run the festival. Even with the horrible image she saw, she keeps strong and continues running the festival. I thought this would take a lot of courage to do and this really helped me decide my overall opinion of the book.
The plot was really intensifying. It all starts out when Claire goes home and finds that once again her dog Rover has ran off. She goes to check if he is at Mrs. Amling’s house (her neighbor) and discovers she has been murdered. Claire called the cops and, they arrive moments later. Days go on and, they finally find a prime suspect. His name is Richard Moline. Well, after a couple of hours of questioning the police let him go. The next day the town is starting the festival and someone discovers Richard Moline is in one of the ice sculpting blocks, dead. The town freaks out and everyone is looking for the murder. Later that week Claire discovered a secret photograph that was a clue to solving the crime, but when the murderer finds out, he/she comes after her. This is why the plot was exciting.
Now you know why this book has such awesome features with it. I mean with a great setting, wonderful characters, and an interesting plot this book was hard to put down. I recommend this book greatly because it was interesting and different from the average mystery book. I hope I have convinced you that this book will be worth your time.

Mortal Engines By Philip Reeve Review by: Brandon J.

Have you ever read an extremely good book? Some might say that the best books have action and suspense in them. But others say it has romance and comedy in them. The book Mortal Engines has plenty of action and suspense with much more.

In the book Mortal Engines we are thousands of years into the future, where the cities and towns are on wheels and have big mouths for the soul purpose of eating other towns just so the people living on the city can make the eaten town into fuel to keep moving. The author described this setting to me so well that I could feel the town rocking with every little movement that it takes just to find another small town to take a visit into the jaws of the colossal moving city that people of this strange world like to call London.

This book has many characters in it but there are only a few main characters. The first one is a young boy named Tom who is an apprentice historian who has spent the whole sixteen years of his life cleaning models and old pictures in the museum. The second character is a young girl named Hester that has a very exiting life of chasing down a killer that murdered her parents to take a weapon from her family.

In this book Hester and Tom are two sixteen year olds that are chasing London down on foot to try to kill the murder that killed Hester’s parents and to try to save a poor city that doesn’t have the money to put their town on wheels.

As Hester and Tom are traveling along chasing after London I feel as if I am

The Fellowship of The Ring By J.R.R. Tolkein review by: Daryll B.

Have you ever read a book that just seems to make you want to be in that book, that story? Some people say no, that they would never want to give up their life right now for anything. The one book in particular that makes me want to be in that story is The Fellowship of The Ring.

In this story, the setting is described as what some people may say as perfect. There are green meadows, dirt roads, huge expanses of forest, and kingdoms all in what is called Middle-Earth. All of this is set up in the past making it much more enjoyable. Why read about the present when “you are in it?”

In these meadows and forest are the characters Bilbo Baggins, Frodo Baggins, Sam Gamgee, Pippin, and Gandalf. All of these characters are very convincing in the book, but they are not human! They are all hobbits with the exception of Gandalf who is in fact a wizard. They all have struggles in their lives that would be considered, in our time, very troubling at the least. Out of all these characters that are forever in my head my favorite is Gandalf. You may not know it, but Gandalf being a wizard, is very “wise”. In the book I perceive him as powerful, smart in a twisted way, having a very peculiar sense of riddles and knowing what to always say. You can never completely understand what he is saying until you read the rest of the book and even then you don’t understand all of it! One of his actions that is widely known in the book is making fireworks. He made some at Bilbo’s party that made every hobbit at the party scatter like ants. The firework looked and acted like a dragon!

While all the fun at the party is going on the plot thickens. It so happens that a ring Bilbo found (in the previous book The Hobbit) is a ring of power. This very ring that Bilbo has is passed on to Frodo. A huge war was fought over the ring including the person who made it. With that ring he could control almost anything. His name was Sauron. When he was finally defeated the ring went through many owners until it ended up with Frodo. Whoever wears the ring becomes invisible. Even though the creator of the ring was defeated he is still alive because he cannot die if the ring is still in this world, and searching for the ring. He now has an army and is looking for it meaning to take it by force. When Fordo is told of this he realizes that it has to be destroyed or have the whole Middle-Earth enslaved. Although he knows this, he is reluctant to take the journey away from the Shire he has always known. Frodo finally decides (with the help of Gandalf) that he must take the journey to get rid of the ring! Sam has to take the journey with him because he heard all of what they said while “working on trimming the grass under the window”. Although they don’t know it there is a greater threat pursuing them that could kill them all to get the ring to its master. If you want to know what the threat is and how it would kill them read the book.

I would highly recommend to read this book because the plot goes much deeper the farther on in the book, making it seem that there really is another world other than ours. Not only that but it makes you think of what is going on, and all the mysteries compel you to read more making it no child book that tells you exactly what is happening and what is going to happen.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R Tolkien review by Brent B.

Was there ever a book that you have heard a lot about but never bothered to pick it up? That’s how I discovered The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien. I never seriously tried to read this book but when I did, the second I put it down all I could say was wow!
The book is set in Middle Earth; a fantasy world set in the time period of the middle ages. Many beings dwell in this Middle Earth, including Men, Elves, Dwarves, Orcs, Nymphs, and hobbits among many other creatures. Middle Earth is a very diverse place. There are mountains, plains, forests, canyons, and rivers. As our characters progress through the story all these wonderful places are toured by the reader. There are 5 main regions in which the people of middle earth live. Shire of the Hobbits, Rohan of the plainsmen, Gondor of the Kings, the Misty Mountains of the Dwarves and the dark land of Mordor. The Elves dwell in forests spread around middle earth like Lorien, and Mirkwood. My favorite place in the book is The Misty Mountains; there are many secrets, and magical qualities surrounding these mountains including Caradras Pass, and the dark Mines of Moria. This book creates a feeling for this majestic land and also creates the downcast theme of darkness that reflects the events of the world around the author. At the time Tolkien was writing the book Great Britain was locked in a desperate struggle for survival against Nazi, Germany and was a very depressed and fearful time in history. However, Tolkien did not create middle earth to reflect the events and the world around him, rather he puts this reflection of a struggle between good and evil that will decide the fate of many people.

There are many characters in the story, but the main group of them is a fellowship centered around Frodo a small Hobbit from a hilly region called the Shire. With him are three other hobbits named Samwise, Merry, and Pippin. The guide of the group is a Wizard named Gandalf the Grey (my favorite character) who is very powerful and mysterious, but is also kind and trustworthy. There is a ranger from the North nicknamed Strider, but his real name is Aragorn son of Arathorn, and he is the heir to the throne of Gondor. There is an Elf named Legolas from the forest of Mirkwood, and a Dwarf named Gimli from the Misty Mountains. Tolkien expertly describes each character and presents their unique skills and personalities. He lets the reader connect with the characters and you start to feel for the characters.

The Plot is exquisitely written and very imaginative. In the simplest description (It would take far more than a page to express it and even scratch the surface) a ring was created by the dark Lord, Sauron of Mordor, and was named the One Ring. It is an evil device that corrupts the heart of its beholder and is always striving to return to its creator, Sauron. The Ring was lost to him during a great battle in which Sauron was vanquished and passed hands till it came to Frodo, who inherited it from his uncle Bilbo Baggins. He later finds out from his friend Gandalf that it is Evil and must be destroyed. So Frodo and the Fellowship begin a quest to journey to the Volcano in Mordor where it was forged at to destroy the Ring.

In conclusion, this book is a great story of struggle between good and evil, it delves deep into detail and develops the story well. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting a fantastic read and I would gladly read it again.

Whale Talk by Christopher Crutcher reviewed by Kirk D.

Have you ever read a book that inspires you? It could be how the author wrote the words or it could be the character inspired you. Books that inspire you in my opinion are the best books to read. They give you something to thing about. Whale Talk is a book that inspired me.

In Whale Talk the setting was mostly at The’s high school or the swimming pool where they practice. This book took place somewhere in 1980 to 1995 but I’m not completely sure when in those years. In Whale Talk you feel like you are the kid in his everyday life.

The main characters in Whale Talk are, The (which is his first name), his full name is The Tao(Dow) Jones and Chris. The story tells about The’s life. The is a very athletic high school student, but he doesn’t like competing and being told what to do, but his Senior year of high school he decides to joy the swim team. Chris is a mentally retarded high school student whose older brother was killed in an accident and his brother was amazing at sports. Chris is not liked by many students but, him and, The become good friends.

The plot of Whale Talk is mostly based around The and his life. The story first starts off giving you an idea of who The is and what his life is like. One of the important thing that happens is The gets people to go out for the swim team because Cutter High School has never had a swim team so The joins. The deals with many different people and problems as the book goes on.

If you enjoy anything with swimming or sports you would enjoy this book, this book inspired me.

Night by Elie Wiesel review by Collin C.

Have you ever read a book that you felt like you couldn’t out it down? Some might say they have and others, might say that they haven’t. They might ay that the Harry Potter’s are books you can’t put down but another book you can’t put down is Night by Elie Wisel. The subject of the book is a very strong one indeed. It may be an easy read but the content in the book is extremely powerful. This is what makes it hard to stop reading it.

The setting in this book is in two or three concentration camps. The first camp is Auschwitz. Auschwitz was one of the biggest camps during the Holocaust. Throughout the book Eliezer and his father transfer to three different camps during their journey. When they first arrived at Auschwitz he was separated from his mom and sister.

The main character is Eliezer. He is a Jewish kid that was captured and taken to concentration camps along with his father. He was thirteen when he first arrived at Auschwitz. He told the guards that he was 18 so that he could go to the working line at the sorting sessions. He bounces to different camps for three or four years. I liked Eliezer because he was smart. He wasn’t like other children in the camp who felt pity for themselves. He wanted to survive. He fought for survival every chance he could get. During one of the sorting sessions he covered his left arm because he had a tattoo of his number. He was very weak and the guards were trying to get rid of the weak. When it was his turn he ran as fast as he could and covered his arm so the doctor could not tell if he was weak or what his number was. If he didn’t do this he would have been executed on the spot.

The plot of the story is it during the holocaust. Hitler has sent out the command to capture all the jews. Eliezer gets captured and he is sent to the concentration camps. He works as hard as he to survive. He tries to make friends in the camps. The Russian army invades one of the camps though so they had to evacuate one of the camps. The next camp he went to he had to work as a block mover. His father does the same thing with him. That camp also almost gets invaded so they move to the last one. His foot has become swollen from walking and running on the snow. He has to get an operation on it to be able to walk. As his father gets weaker and weaker so does he. They had to run the entire way to the other camp that ended up to be over 60 miles there, When they get there they are sent to their blocks. Eliezer’s dada dies in his. Eliezer survived because the Russian invaded.

I recommend this book very much because it is a powerful book that tells you about the holocaust. It was very well written. I really enjoyed this book. The lexile may be down but the content is very strong.

Flags of our Fathers: Heroes of Iwo Jima by James Bradley with Ron Powers review by Kyle C.

I wasn’t alive during World War 2 but James Bradley who is the son of a WW2 veteran gets some many clear details that it actually feels like I am in Iwo Jima, Japan. This book is about the 6 flag raisers that rose America’s flag after America won the battle at Iwo Jima. In this book James Bradley tries to retrace his dads past and the other flag raisers past and try to connect what happened on that day at Iwo Jima. As you read you really get hooked on one of America’s bloodiest battles.

This book takes place in Iwo Jima, Japan. Iwo Jima is a extinct volcanic island just off the coast of Japan. This hold host for many battles in WW1 and WW2. It was a good battle station for the Japanese because it was almost impossible to bomb it because there was heavy artillery all over the island. There is no question what those men had to go through nobody would ever feel their pain. The 6 flag raisers names were Jack Bradley, Rene Gagnon, Ira Hayes, Harlon Block, Mike Strank, and Franklin Sousley. It’s a descriptive and fun book because it tells about each one of the flag raisers life’s before Iwo Jima. For example Jack was a boy with old school parents who encouraged him to get in the war. Right before he went into to the war he knew he would be a hero and he was right.

The plot of this book was about James Bradley retracing back the 6 flag raisers pasts an what they went through at Iwo Jima. During the book James finds facts and tells about how all the flag raisers lifes were before they were drafted into the United States Navy and Army. This book is basically a diary or journal keeping track of what all of the men did before, during, and after the war. It really gets down deep with gory battles and heartbreaking moments. They knew whatever happened in their lives after the war they would always remember the day at Iwo Jima.

This is a great book for people who enjoy historical American books.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling review by Travis S,

Have you ever read a book that you really liked? Some people would say no other people would say that they love any book by Dan Brown. I say that a really good book is Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Because it has good characters, setting, and Plot.

The characters in, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix are very well portrayed in the story, because not only do they add in personality of the character, J.K. Rowling also put in development of the characters lives. She has the main character; Harry develops in ways, unimaginable. He is more developed in that J.K. Rowling shows that he is more interested in the family he has he starts to care deeply about Sirius his godfather. She has him develop in different ways that make the story so good. They also start to do develop the secondary characters in ways that make them that much more important to the story, and plot of the book. She has the characters develop in a way, that you then want to read the other books. She really works magic in the characters.

The setting of the book is very well described. J.K. Rowling intrigues you in the way she words Harry walking around the castle halls of Hogwarts. She describes Hogwarts in the book in more detail than ever before. She really tries to make you feel as though you were right there at Hogwarts. The one thing I do have a problem with is they never really tell you when actually this occurs. They add in some clues but they never really describe the time setting. Some of the things they go into are which hall they are sneaking around in, which area of the forest they go into, and where each door really is compared to where the character is.

The Plot of the book is quite well laid out. They explain everything in order, nothing ever really seems out of place. They have Harry starts when he summer at his aunt and uncle’s house, Then J.K. Rowling has him go off to Hogwarts. He starts his year, and does his school work like he should. Then things go off and he starts a club for him to teach some of the other students Defense Against the dark arts. After this it is at a lull. Not much happens and he goes on with his schoolwork and the club. Then he starts to know about Lord Voldemort’s plans and what he is doing, then he goes to stop him, and I don’t want to spoil the ending. There were some low spots but overall the books plot was quite well.

In the book Harry potter and the order of the phoenix, the characters were portrayed and written quite well. The setting was very well laid out, and very descriptive. Although the time this took place was not really clear, but overall a good job. The characters were in my opinion the best part. They were very well portrayed. The plot was very good other than they were some times not fluent. I would recommend this book.

The Gashouse Gang by John Heidenry review by Tanner B.

Have you ever read a really good book? Maybe you liked it because it was funny. Maybe you love a good romance like Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare. I personally like books about sports that have some humor in them. The Gashouse Gang was just that. It had an interesting setting. The main characters could not have been found anywhere else. The plot though the book was funny was very riveting.

The setting of The Gashouse Gang was the MLB baseball park in St. Louis Missouri. Though the team traveled a lot most of the altercations between the main players took place at their ball club. This book takes place in the middle of the Great Depression, 1930-1935. The stadium can’t seem to get near as many attendants as the other ball clubs because it was right after the dreaded dust bowl accured.

Dizzy Dean is a character like non other. He is a loud out spoken dominant pitcher who doesn’t drink. He was born to work in the cotton fields but whenever he got the chance he would play ball against the other kids. He didn’t go to a lot of school. The only day he went was on Friday. When oddly enough though not by coincidence Friday is when the boys at school would play baseball. When Dizzy grew up he joined the army. While in the army he played for their baseball team. The young pitcher was then offered to play for a minor league team in Texas. While playing in Texas the young stud was so good that the coach didn’t want to give Dizzy up to a major league even though it was his job. When the owner of the Cardinals made an offer the owner of the Texas team he couldn’t refuse it was off to the majors for Dizzy where he would not only get himself in trouble with the mangers of the Cardinals he would get his younger brother Paul (who was also a pitcher) into some trouble too.

The plot of this story is about the Cardinals a down on their luck team under new management try to win the pennant. Though they did just two years earlier in1932 things had gotten a lot worse. The Great Depression had gotten even worse without showing a sign of things getting better. Since the Depression was worse so was the flow of money for teams that need to get make big payments to big players. The Depression also affected the amount of fans that came to ball games. The season was not looking good.

I highly recommend this book if you are a sports fan and want some good laughs. It is a heart-warming story because so many of the players came from nothing. If you want to find out if the Cardinals win the pennant even though luck is a far cry from their side you should go and read this book.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien review by Alex C.

Who do you think is the best author of our time? Some would say J.K. Rowling or Christopher Paolini. I believe that the best author of our time was J.R.R Tolkien because of his books titled: The Lord of the Rings.

In this epic saga, Tolkien paints his words so vividly that you are half afraid that the pages will come alive! He has mystery and suspense on every page and his descriptions of places Like Mordor or Minas Morgul leave you gasping for air. The amount of detail he puts into his writing is phenomenal. His characters are larger than life, his enemies fierce and terrifying and his climaxes are nothing short of amazing!

My favorite character in the series has been Gollum if only because of his multiple personality disorder. He believes he is both Gollum the cave creature and Sméagol: The kind river person.
Several other reasons include: His maddening thirst for the ring, his anger toward anything happy and his dislike of cooked food.

My least favorite character thus far has been Legolas because of his airy, almost superior actions and dialogue.

The Vile Village by Lemony Snicket review by Matt C.

How would you feel if one day your life changed completely from good to bad, and that every day you would live in fear of some villain taking you away for your family’s money? Well that is what happens in the “Series of Unfortunate Events: The Vile Village” by Lemony Sniket.
The Baudelaire Orphans have been very unique ever since they were born. Violet, the oldest child is a really good inventor and is always thinking of ways to get out of trouble. Klaus, the second Baudelaire is a researcher who loves nothing more than reading books, and sunny the third and youngest Baudelaire is only a baby and already has grown up teeth that she uses to bite her way out of situations.
The Orphans have been tracked down by Count Olaf, who is their greedy Uncle and who wants nothing more than to make their lives miserable and take their enormous family fortune by taking them away until they come of age to inherit their family’s fortune. They are taken to a town where they are being taken care of by all the people living in the town having no Idea that Count Olaf is already there. Having to follow hundreds of rules, written by ridiculous people, and worrying about lots of crows! The Baudelaire Orphans have to survive the “Vile Village.”
I would recommend this book to people who like to learn new words while they read, and to kids who love Mystery and crime solving novels. “The Vile Village” is the seventh book in the “Series of Unfortunate Events” and is a very good addition to the series.

The Breakup Bible by Melissa Kantare reviewed by Brianna M.

Have you ever felt like a piece of your heart is missing? Well in the book, The Breakup Bible, Jennifer has this feeling a lot her junior year. In The Breakup Bible, Jennifer is feeling invisible because her true love hates her; her friends don’t know how to make her forget about him, and Jennifer is trying to find that missing piece of her heart.

The setting of the book I can relate to in life. The Breakup Bible is set in the present time including very rich preppy girls trying to rule the school. While your reading the book, if you close your eyes you can see the pain in Jennifer’s eyes and heart. When you close your eyes while reading you can also see her true love, Max, break her heart because he doesn’t see much interest in her anymore. You see that everyday at any school and work now days.

Jennifer and her brother are my favorite characters because of their imagination, curiosity, and adventures. She imagines what her life would be like if that piece of her heart was back in her life. Max is her ex-boyfriend that she is hoping that he gives her piece of her heart back. Max, her brother, because how he tries his best to make Jennifer cheerful again. He try’s by telling her that boys suck but at the same time he is trying to be a gangster.

When Max, her true love, drops her off at her house he tells her “ I don’t want to go out with you anymore because I don’t see much interest in you anymore.” After that night she feels like a piece of her heart is still with him and he will not give it back. Her mom and brother try to make her feel better when they make her smile. Jennifer’s dad and his husband set her up on a blind date. He kisses her and she never talks to him again. The rest of the book talks about the adventure of finding out what’s ahead of her in life and if she can get that piece back. Will she or will she not find the missing piece of the puzzle? Will she get back together with Max?

I would recommend this book to anybody who likes adventure and boys. If you feel like you’re a piece of your heart is missing then read The Breakup Bible because it gives you inspiration.

Saint by Ted Dekker review by Becca V.

Have you read a really good book lately? Some people will say that they don’t like to read and haven’t. Others might say they’ve read too many to count. I have. The book Saint, by Ted Dekker, is a great book because of its exciting setting, lively characters, and thrilling plot.

Ted Dekker really captures you into Saint set in the future date of 2033. You can see the streets of New York City, or the small town of Paradise, Colorado if you close your eyes. With the car chase along New York City streets and alleys, you can see the two yellow cabs racing, being thrown around by some mysterious force, and swerving to miss pedestrians. In the town of Paradise, the valley is clearer than ever in this book. With the houses and businesses lining the streets, Dekker makes you feel like you’re actually there.

Carl, also known as Johnny and Saint, is an assassin in training, and one of my favorite characters. He’s been lead to believe that his handler, Kelly, was his wife and they had a son named, Matthew. He’s been betrayed by the people he works for, and by the one he loves. Saint’s been through some tough times. Whether it’s affecting the temperature in his pit, or surviving in a box full of hornets after having a two thousand range and being chased down by another assassin who has a gun, he has only a knife. Ted Dekker really makes Saint come to life on the pages; he leads his readers to believe that he is real.

Englishman is Saint’s competitor, and my other favorite character. With the similar appearance of Jude Law, you’d never think someone like this would be an assassin. He may be the bad guy, but he’s one of the most exciting characters. He possesses a power, telekinesis. He tracks down Saint when he goes to Colorado, trying to get away from Englishman after failing to assassinate the president. Englishman thrives to kill, meaning he would go to any length to be successful in his assassination. Dekker makes his readers feel like Englishman is walking down their street the moment they read about him.

Saint has one of the most thrilling plots I’ve ever read. The car chases, fights, and violence just add to it. Saint has a mission to kill the Iranian Defense Minister, but his objectives get switched seconds before he makes the kill. But what do they get switched to? He now has to kill the President of the United States, Robert Stenton. But can he? Englishman’s objective is to kill Saint, but if Saint runs, it will only make it more difficult for Englishman. Does Englishman kill Saint? Does Saint kill the President? I know.

The book Saint, by Ted Dekker, is a great book because of it’s exciting setting, lively characters, and thrilling plot. Saint was one of the best books I’ve ever read. It’s one of my favorites. I totally recommend it to anyone. Even those who don’t like to read, because they may find that, with this book, they actually enjoy reading.

Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen review by Casey H.

Do you like books about romance and family issues? Lock and key would be a great book for you then; it deals with some real life problems. Lock and Key had amazing setting, great characters, and an even better plot. It is one of my favorite Sarah Dessen books.
First off the setting of this book was great. A lot of Dessen’s books have the same setting, in the same town. This one happened to be in a town called Lakeview. The main character Ruby has lived many places in this town. Many of which have been run down, messy, and just down right revolting. That is until she moved in with her older sister, moving into basically a mansion equipped with a pond in the backyard! The setting in which this book takes place is visual, the way she describes it, it could make you feel as if you lived there.

As for characters, the main one was Ruby. Ruby is a high-strung teen; one who always wanted to do things herself and have no one help her. She is sent off to live with her sister, Cora, when her mom, if you will, “abandoned” her. Cora is Ruby’s older sister, who Ruby hasn’t seen for years. Cora is beautiful with dark hair, petite, so caring, and completely opposite from her sister. Then finally, there’s Nate. Nate, is Ruby’s love interest. Nate is a wonderful boy and has a past too. As you get on with the book, things will start to unravel as you start to learn about each character’s past and present.

Lastly, there’s the plot of the book. In Lock and Key, there are major ups and downs. Things such as Ruby’s mom leaving her but then again, she was never there for her from the start. Or even Ruby’s awkward encounter with meeting Nate. When Ruby is forced to live with Cora, she was unwilling. Ruby hated the fact of having to owe people and even having something to do with them. The last thing she wanted was to be in debt to people. Always as her mom taught her, she was running away from problems to. Later on though as the story moves on she starts to look past these things and starts letting people in, starts trusting. Ruby helps a few people with their problems along the way too.

Overall I would have to say that this book was really different and interesting. It had an amazing story to tell, with even more interesting characters. I would have to say if you’re looking for something different to read with life problems and even romance, THIS IS IT. Lock and Key was defiantly a winner for me.

Rangers Apprentice: Norgate Fief by John Flanagan review by Bret A.

Do you have a favorite book? Some might say they like realistic books or sport books. Both of those are great, but one of my true favorites is the medieval genre. It incorporates all kinds of things such as action and sometimes even a bit of romance.
The story takes place in the kingdom of Arulean in a fief called Norgate, a northern section of the kingdom always covered in snow. It is a beautiful place with majestic mountains and white frosty tree tops reaching up toward the sky. John Flanagan, the author of the book, puts you in the story right next to the main characters. He is great at giving you a mental picture of what surrounds the characters.
Will, once a rangers apprentice, has recently been added to the Ranger Corps and assigned to his own fief at the age of seventeen. He is very wise and well trained but also has a humorous teenage side to him. His mentor Halt, the one who guided him to becoming a Ranger, also appears in the book when Will is assigned to his new mission. Halt, a man of about fifty, is quite a mystery among the people of the kingdom and is actually feared amongst the people for being known as some kind of mystical sorcerer. Alyss, a girl that Will grew up with in an orphanage, is a tall, beautiful girl who Will has always kind of had the sweets for.
Rumors have been being aroused about the great sorcerer, Malkallam, returning to wreak havoc to the royal family of Norgate fief. Their leader, lord Syron, has been poisoned and of course people believe that this is the evil work of the mysterious sorcerer that lives in the woods outside of the castle. When Will arrives and figures out that all of this is the fault of lord Syron’s nephew Sir Keren, who also has poisoned the son of Syron, the only person they can turn to is the great Malkallam the supposed sorcerer who resides in the mysterious woods outside of the castle.
This book will keep you on the edge of your seat and has all kinds of weird twists and turns. It is definitely a book I would recommend, especially if you’re into medieval themes.

The Rifle by Gary Paulson review by Robert Counts

Have you ever read a book about someone or something’s history? Most people have read a few in their life. The book The Rifle by Gary Paulsen is just that. The Rifle has decent settings, characters, and a plot.
To start off with, the setting of The Rifle is all over the place. The start of the book’s setting is in an old western town with a man named Cornish McManus. From there he sells the rifle he made to a young boy named John Byam. He serves in the Revolutionary War with the rifle. After he dies the rifle is left in the attic of an old house. After it is discovered, it is then auctioned off to an antique collector. Then, a man buys the rifle and leaves it above his fireplace.
Second of all, there are many characters in The Rifle. It starts off with a man named Cornish McManus who makes and holds the rifle for some of the book. He sells it to a young boy named John Byam. He has the rifle for much of the book and uses it in the Revolutionary War. Then it lands in the hands of a lady named Sarah who leaves it in the attic of a house. Later in the story, the gun is discovered by two children playing in the attic.
Lastly, the plot of The Rifle is short and to the point. Cornish McManus starts the history of the rifle when he makes it. He crafts a “sweet” rifle after months of work. “Sweet” means that the rifle has a very accurate shot and is one of a kind. He sells the rifle later to a man named John Byam for money to buy a ring for his girlfriend. He uses the rifle to help in the Revolutionary War. The history of the rifle is very long and vast.
In conclusion, The Rifle by Gary Paulsen is an interesting book. I would not recommend it to anyone that likes mystery, horror, funny, or adventure books. The Rifle is a book about an ordinary man who crafts and extraordinary rifle.

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger review by Rosie F.

Do you like books with little twists turns, unexpected events, or just flat out romance? If so, The Time Travelers Wife would be a great book for you to read. This book had me at “It’s hard being left behind”. The Time Travelers Wife is a book that has romance, and a bit of drama here and there. But that’s what makes it so interesting and keeps you hooked on.

First, the setting in this book is everywhere; all over the world he does not have a stable place that he stays. Since Henry time travels to different places at different times unexpectedly. Most of it takes place at their home. Some of the book takes place at the “meadow” where Clare always has clothes for Henry cause when he time travels he can’t take anything with him; not even his wallet.

Henry and Clare are why I am in love with book and why it has become one of my favorite books. The tension between them, and how deeply they are in love with each other never gets old. Clare has known Henry since she was six, and has been in love with him ever since. Henry has his moments were he is a total jerk sometimes, but that just makes the book more intense and makes you never want to put the book down. Henry can be a jerk by the things he says, or does or even acts like to Clare.

And lastly, everything that happens in this book is just magnificent. Henry randomly time travels, but can’t stop it even if he wanted to. He doesn’t know how he got this “gift” of his. Sometimes it brings him down, but he tries for it not to. There is a huge unexpected turn towards the end of the book I never saw it coming and if you read it also I believe you wont see it coming also. Even thought that twist is there it just makes this book even more glorious.

Shock Wave by Clive Cussler review by Clay C.

Shock Wave is a book by Clive Cussler this is a book about a killer plague killing a lot of sea life around Australia and Antarctica. One of the main Characters is Dirk Pitt he is in a project called NUMA it is a sea life program working on the mysterious deaths of sea life, and now also human life.
The setting of this book goes everywhere. It is set for about five years from now. At first it starts on a cruise in the Antarctic where the plague hits and kills all of the passengers and crewmembers but about 14. Afterwards they are saved by a man named Dirk Pitt. Who saw that their life raft was on the shore, and they are brought onto their ship. The next is in the United States, Washington D.C. Afterwards the setting stays in the ocean and on an islands.
The main Characters are Dirk Pitt and Arthur Dorsett; the whole story revolves around them mainly, because they are fighting (fist to fist) about the deaths Arthur is causing. Arthur Dorsett has three daughters Boudicca, and Deirdre; her father stole Maeve’s two six-year-old sons because she changed her name to an old grandmother’s last name.
There isn’t much that I can tell you about the plot, because it will give the rest of the story away if I do. There is a major sound wave headed for a heavily populated area the NUMA organization tries to stop it but if they do it could cause a volcanic explosion on the mining islands. Arthur Dorsett is the 6th richest person in the world, and he has discovered a way to dig up diamonds four times faster, but this machine emits sound waves (he has four of them on four islands) when these sound waves meet they and rise above the surface and are somehow powerful enough to kill animals and humans. The plague hits a cruise in the Antarctic and kills all of the passengers and crewmembers but about 14 of them.

That is all I can tell you about this book because you need to read it to find out the rest. This is an action book but also part mystery and adventure. This is a kind of book where you don’t know what’s going to happen next.

Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen review by Shelby J.

Have you ever not known where your life is going? I’m sure all of us have at some point. In the book Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen the main character has to deal with her mom abandoning her, finding a new home, and restarting in a new school. I know that I can agree that everyone has issues every once in awhile that makes our lives flip upside down.
The main character, Amy who is seventeen is very shy, and sort of let’s people say and do what they want to her. She has trouble making new friends, and sticking up for what she thinks. Amy is what makes this story so interesting. She is a great character to narrate it because all the tragic events happen to her, so you can really visualize it from her point of view.
The setting of The Lock and Key is in a small town called Jacksonville, which is where that the main character Amy has to go and live in. Jacksonville is a big suburb town, were most people know each other and everything is pretty much set in stone. This is the place Amy goes and lives in after her mom leaves her behind to start a new life. Its hard to imagine having to leave your high school and start over new when your seventeen years old.
Cora, Jamie and Nate are the supporting characters that help the story come alive, and help shape Amy’s life. Cora is Amy’s older sister, who she hasn’t seen in years but after her mom leaves they are forced to reunite. Jamie is Cora’s husband who tries to keep everything going smoothly and make everyone happy. Last but not least, there’s Nate, who is Amy’s newfound love in her new town of Jacksonville.
I would think that the theme to this story would be that even the most heartbreaking things can turn out for the best. This would tie in with Amy’s story because she was so heartbroken when her mom left, but she decided that maybe it was good she didn’t have her bad influence anymore and this was a good chance to have a new start.
I can’t completely relate to this story, just because I’ve never had such deep problems with my family life, but there may be many people who have, and this book would be great for them to read. Even if you haven’t had family issues to relate to, this book would still be great to read. I would recommend it to any reader, it has a really interesting plot.

Abduction by Peg Kehert review by Courtney M.

Have you ever felt like you were in the book? Some people might say yes. In this book Abduction by Peg Kehert you really feel like you are with the kids in this book.
This book is a realistic book. It is about abduction. In this world there is a lot of abduction babies,Children and adults. In this book it really makes me feel like I am in the book. I feel like I was there with the kids every moment. I really didn’t have to close my eyes to imagine where they were, I could just imagine sitting there.
One of the main characters of the book is bonnie. She was my favorite character because even though she was only 13. She did everything beyond her power to find her brother. When everyone has given up on finding him she still tried to find him. She made me feel really good about the book’s ending.
In this book a little boy gets abducted from his second grade class. They get the police involved and everything but never would they expect that the person who abducted him would ever do anything like that. When he has been missing for a while they kind of give up on looking for him. Until the sister does something drastic that changed everything we thought.
I suggest reading this book because it leads you in a different direction every time you read a chapter. It is a very intense book, but also very good. I would say the ending is the best part!

Peeps by Scott Westerfied review by Chrissy S.

Have you ever been in a big place full of mysteries and secrets? Well reading the book Peeps makes you feel as if you’re in a whole new world of Manhattan. The book is based on characters, setting, and plot and takes you on an adventure through the eyes of NOT so human beings.
The setting of the book Peeps lets you know how dangerous big cities can really be. Compared to the town I live in, small and not very scary, and to present day Manhattan, big and packed full of criminals, violence, and mysteries. When the author describes the busy city streets, it’s as if I was right there above those streets looking down on them with watchful eyes. The streets being crowded with people of all races and the smell of newly printed newspaper and the hot steaming grills of hot dog stands cooking up their daily pay. The loud sound of the traffic horns and the smell of exhaust. The everyday life of Manhattan.
The main character in this book is not like regular people. As the author first described them in the beginning, it seemed as if they were right in front of me, as if I could imagine every single facial part of their face or the particular smell that they had. The first character is a 19 year old boy named Cal. He is considered, “different”. He is also infected with the parasite but the parasite he has is not quite as insane. The parasite that he has lets him think normal and act normal but his senses are a lot stronger then regular. He can see in the dark, can smell even the smallest smells in the air and can hear sounds from miles away. The second character is Lace, short for Lacey, has just met Cal and learning about the reason why Cal is so different. She is very interested in what he does but can disappear forever if she does decide to help him with his job. Both of them seem to have something in common. But Lace is a girl who is not so girly and says “dude” a lot. Cal can sometimes be left out of things. He is really quiet and hesitates when he talks to new people.
In the book Peeps, a very strange diseases has been spread through out the city limits. According to Cal, it’s not exactly a disease, it’s a parasite. This particular parasite possesses the human body and totally takes over the body. The disaffects of the parasite are, doesn’t like sunlight, cannibalism, and your entire personality changes. Through the book, Cal is on a mission to find people that have been infected with this parasite and cure them. But as he meets a friend along the way, he has to make a decision on weather to let her help or have her disappear, forever.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling review by Sarah F.

Have you ever read the Harry Potter Series? It’s a very popular series in our world today, and many people have read it. Some people would say they liked the first one best while others like the last. Either way they are all good. In Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban there are amazing characters, neat settings and a cool plot.

In Harry Potter there are good and bad characters. The main character is Harry Potter. He is a young boy who faces many challenges in the muggle (human) world and in the magical world. He faces these challenges with his two best friends Ron and Hermione. Ron is my favorite character because he is really funny and has a good personality. He overreacts at things like when he thought his rat, Scabbers, got eaten by Hermione’s cat. Lord Voldermort is the bad guy in all the books and he is after Harry. In this book everyone thinks Serious Black is a mass murder after he supposedly killed Peter Petigrew and gave away the location of Harry’s parents, which led to their deaths. Also the dementors have been messing with Harry. They are not nice creatures at all. They suck the happiness out of you. Who would want that?

Also the setting is like our world and is not all at the same time. When Harry lives with his only relatives, the Dursleys, all they want is to have a normal life. No magical nonsense with them. But when Harry gets to Hogwarts, it is anything but normal. The classes and the people are very unusual. Many wizards grew up as muggles, but many have lived in the magical world for a long time and understand it. Everything is different when you get to Hogwarts. I love how J.K. Rowlings made it so the reader can relate to the text, but at the same time it’s so different and it pulls you in so you just want to read more.

In this book the plot is that Serious Black has gotten out of Azkaban. Black is accused of giving away Harry’s parents hiding place and killing ten muggles and Peter Petigrew. They say that he is an Accompanist of He Who Should Not Be Named (Lord Voldemort). What happens to Harry? Does Black live? What will happen next? You’re going to have to read the books to find out.

Sum of All Fears by Tom Clancy reviewed by Austyn E,

Have you read a book that kept you wanting to read more and more? Some people might say that just a good story line will keep you interested. I think that a story must have suspense and cliffhangers to keep a reader interested. In the Book Sum of All Fears written by Tom Clancy you will fin plenty of both to keep you guessing what happens next. That is what you want out of a fictional book is too be interesting.
The story takes place in a lot of different places that have many contrasts to each other. It first starts out at a dessert in Israel on a bright sunny day with a camouflaged jet streaking across the sky then story than takes a swing to the United States of America in the city of Baltimore. For the next setting the book switches from Moscow, Russia and Baltimore, United Sates. Later in the book the reader takes a trip to the cold snowy region of Siberia.
One of the most important characters named John that lives in Baltimore and has a fiancé that works at the hospital. John works for the CIA but can only tell people he is a Historian. He is suddenly asked to make sure the Russians are getting rid of their nuclear arsenal. He travels there with another group of agents to Siberia and finds that bomb experts are missing. In the next part of the book John races to find the bomb technicians to advert nuclear war.
And eventually learn of a man pulling the strings and trying to complete what Hitler started. To conquer the world by getting rid of Russia and the United States.
The story Sum of All Fears is full of characters and antagonist with a lot of mystery and suspense. With this story every reader will keep guessing until the very end of the book. However I don’t really recommend the book because it is very long and is very confusing. If you have time it is very interesting however.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon Review by Taylor B,

Have you read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time written by Mark Haddon? It is a great book. The characters are very interesting and the plot is attention grabbing.

The main character of the book is Christopher, who is an autistic 15-year-old kid. He is very smart and thinks very logically. In the book he is always drawing diagrams or explaining difficult math problems and games that take a lot of thinking. He does not like the colors yellow or brown and refuses to touch them. If someone touches him he screams or hits them. And if he is around a lot of people he lays down on the ground and groans, and he cannot lie.

The book is about Christopher going outside one night to find his neighbors dog dead with a fork in its side. Christopher turns it into a murder mystery and tries to find the murderer. Throughout the book he finds out important information about his dead mother, almost goes to jail, and more.

The book takes place in a town close to London. Christopher does go to London in one part of the book. Most of the time Christopher is in his neighborhood or school or his house.

Overall I thought the book was ok. It was very interesting but got very annoying because Christopher was always thinking logically and never believed in anything that there was no proof of and won’t talk to people when he should. I still recommend this book to all people.

These main characters meet others on their journey, but these three become very close and nearly inseparable.

The pulse was cell phone transferred and turned people into vicious zombies that kill everything they can see. As Mark and his newly found companions travel from Boston to Maine hoping the zombies don’t catch up. As the zombies seem to get more powerful Mark starts to wonder what happened to his real family.

This exciting story keeps you on the edge of your seat. You won’t want to stop reading it. I recommend this book to anybody who likes a scary mystery type of book. You won’t be disappointed, I promise.
