I wasn’t alive during World War 2 but James Bradley who is the son of a WW2 veteran gets some many clear details that it actually feels like I am in Iwo Jima, Japan. This book is about the 6 flag raisers that rose America’s flag after America won the battle at Iwo Jima. In this book James Bradley tries to retrace his dads past and the other flag raisers past and try to connect what happened on that day at Iwo Jima. As you read you really get hooked on one of America’s bloodiest battles.
This book takes place in Iwo Jima, Japan. Iwo Jima is a extinct volcanic island just off the coast of Japan. This hold host for many battles in WW1 and WW2. It was a good battle station for the Japanese because it was almost impossible to bomb it because there was heavy artillery all over the island. There is no question what those men had to go through nobody would ever feel their pain. The 6 flag raisers names were Jack Bradley, Rene Gagnon, Ira Hayes, Harlon Block, Mike Strank, and Franklin Sousley. It’s a descriptive and fun book because it tells about each one of the flag raisers life’s before Iwo Jima. For example Jack was a boy with old school parents who encouraged him to get in the war. Right before he went into to the war he knew he would be a hero and he was right.
The plot of this book was about James Bradley retracing back the 6 flag raisers pasts an what they went through at Iwo Jima. During the book James finds facts and tells about how all the flag raisers lifes were before they were drafted into the United States Navy and Army. This book is basically a diary or journal keeping track of what all of the men did before, during, and after the war. It really gets down deep with gory battles and heartbreaking moments. They knew whatever happened in their lives after the war they would always remember the day at Iwo Jima.
This is a great book for people who enjoy historical American books.

ReplyDeleteI think I would enjoy reading this book. You expressed the plot and theme of the book very well; I really got a feel about the book. It seems like a great book in a heroic time in American history.
ReplyDeleteI have watched movies and shows on the bombing of Japan and they were really interesting. I think this book would give me a little more detail in about everything that happened on that brutal day, and I could see more of what those men went through that day.

I've always liked war themes and this book sounds very interesting and I think that I would very much like to read this book. Nice job of explaining it as well.
ReplyDeleteDear Kyle,
ReplyDeleteI thought that you were very detailed in describing iwo jima and the islands. I really like war books and by your review it sounds like it could be a very good book. I like how you tell us that the island is very hard to attack and that you describe why it is so hard to attack. I like how you describe the plot of the book and actually tell us what it is about.
